Alfa Romeo MiTo Specs Released

Alfa Romeo have released the specifications of their MiTo 3 door hatchback. 3 engine variants are on offer initially, a 1.6 turbodiesel, a 1.4 petrol turbo, and a normally aspirated 1.4 petrol. The most powerful is the turbocharged 1.4 litre petrol variant, with 155 PS (114 kW) wrung out of the little four cylinder engine. Developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies, the 1368 cc engine has a bore of 72.0 mm and a stroke of 84.0 mm. Running a 9.8 compression ratio, the 16 valve unit delivers 155 PS (114 kW) at 5500 rpm, and can produce up to 230 Nm of torque at 4250 rpm, thanks to the use of a low inertia turbocharger. This is almost double the power the normally aspirated version of this engine produces - the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 MPI is rated at just 78 PS (58 kW) at 6000 rpm. If at first that seem unreasonably low, it was produced specifically for use under an Italian law which restricts those who have just passed their driving test to vehicles with a power to weight ratio of less than 50 kW per tonne. This law comes into effect in January 2009. Both these petrol units are mated to six speed manual transmissions, but alternatives will be offered at a later stage. The turbocharged MiTo manages respectable performance, with the 0-100 km/h sprint taking a claimed 8 seconds dead, and a top speed of 215 km/h. The non-turbo version is rather more pedestrian, the 0-100 km/h dash taking 12.3 seconds, and the top speed is just 165 km/h.
The third engine choice available from launch is the 1.6 JTDm turbodiesel. Also developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies, this 16 valve 4 cylinder unit features common rail direct diesel injection, and manages 120 PS (88 kW) at 3750 rpm, and has 320 Nm of torque available at 1750 rpm. As with the other power units, only a 6 speed manual transmission is available initially.
The body is fairly small, at 4063 mm long, 1721 mm wide and 1446 mm tall. The 3 door hatchback sits on a 2511 mm wheelbase, and has a competitive 0.29 coefficient of drag. The kerb weights vary from 1080 kg for the normally aspirated 1.4 petrol version, to 1205 kg for the 1.6 JTDm. Standard tyres fitted to all three models are 195/55 R 16s, front and rear.
