Mercedes-Benz E 420 CDI - Heavyweight diesel
Thursday June 09, 2005
Mercedes-Benz has released their hardest-hitting passenger car diesel ever. The E 420 CDI features a 75 degree V-8 engine packing 310 bhp (314 PS) and a stonking 730 nm of torque at 2200 rpm. This is enough to endow the almost 1900 kg vehicle with a speed potentially way above the 250 km/h it is electronically limited to. It will hit 100 km/h from rest in a claimed 6.1 seconds.
The common-rail turbocharged diesel also features twin overhead cams and 4 valve cylinder heads. Although the model is designated a "420", the displacement is just a touch under 4 litres, at 3996 cc. This works out to a very respectable 77.6 bhp/litre.
