More new Mercedes-Benz models: S 420 CDI
Wednesday December 06, 2006
The guys at Mercedes-Benz certainly keep us busy! Today a new S-class V8 diesel model was announced, the S 420 CDI. A 3996 cc, 32 valve common rail direct diesel injection engine with 320 PS and 730 Nm of torque provides the large Benz with sprightly performance. The 0-100 km/h sprint is covered in a claimed 6.6 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 250 km/h. Ultimate performance is blunted somewhat by the massive 2090 kg kerbweight, but is still impressive for a diesel in this class. The 247 g/km CO2 emissions are equally good for the class - the Audi A8 4.2 TDI manages only 358 g/km, although the claimed acceleration time of 6.1 seconds for 0-100 km/h just shades the S 420 CDI.
Power is transmitted via a 7-speed G-TRONIC 'automatic 'box. A long-wheelbase version is also available. The engine is of square (86.0 mm bore & stroke) dimensions, and runs a 17:1 compression ratio. Order books are already open for this model, with deliveries scheduled to begin sometime in December 2006.
