New Mercedes-Benz C Class arrives

The latest iteration of Mercedes-Benz' C-Class has been released, and the specifications of the launch models have been made known. The range initially will comprise of 3 diesel and 5 petrol versions, with the C 350 being the top of the range at launch. The saloon body is the first to be offered, with estate and sportcoupe versions likely to follow.
The new saloon is 4581 mm long, 55 mm longer than its predecessor,
and has a 45 mm longer wheelbase at 2760 mm. It is also 42 mm wider, at 1770 mm.
The new body has outstanding aerodynamics as well, with a 0.27 coefficient of drag combined with a low 2.17 m2 frontal area, to give a combined CdA of just 0.586, which is exceptional for any class of car.
The C 200 CDI features the 2.1 litre diesel with common rail direct diesel injection. It gives the model a claimed top speed of 215 km/h from its 136 PS (100 kW)/270 Nm of turbodiesel power.
Next up is the C 220 CDI, with the same size engine but 170 PS (125 kW) and 400 Nm, with a claimed top speed of 229 km/h.
The last diesel on offer at launch is the C 320 CDI, with a 3 litre V6 common rail direct diesel injection engine. This has 224 PS (165 kW) and 510 Nm, and will propel the car to a maximum speed of 250 km/h, with the 0-100 km/h benchmark completed in 7.7 seconds.
The petrol engined variants start with the C 180 Kompressor, a 1796 cc supercharged 4 cylinder with 156 PS (115 kW) and 230 Nm of torque. It has a claimed top speed of 223 km/h.
Next is the C 200 Kompressor, which also has the same 1796 cc capacity, but with 184 PS (135 kW) and 250 Nm, and a 235 km/h top end.
First of the naturally aspirated petrol engines is the C 230, a 2.5 litre V6 with 204 PS (150 kW), 245 Nm and a claimed 240 km/h top speed.
The C 280 is the next biggest naturally aspirated petrol engine, and it has a very oversquare (88.0 mm bore and 68.4 mm stroke) 3-litre V6 (with a 88.0 mm bore and 82.1 mm stroke) and it offers a 250 km/h top speed thanks to the 231 PS (170 kW) and 300 Nm it produces.
Last of the petrol engines is the C 350. The only C-Class variant at launch to offer an automatic transmission (the others having 6 speed manual gearboxes), it features Mercedes-Benz' 7-GTRONIC 7-speed automatic gearbox. It features a 3.5 litre V6 (and is the only new C-Class whose model designation matches the capacity of the engine!) with 272 PS (200 kW) and 350 Nm of torque. It sprints to 100 km/h from rest in a claimed 6.4 seconds - not bad for a slushbox!
