Mercedes-Benz Concept Ocean Drive - NAIAS 2007
Saturday January 06, 2007
Many news outlets have already covered the Mercedes-Benz Concept Ocean Drive, but today Mercedes-Benz have released the specifications for it.
Starting with an S-Class (the S 600), Mercedes-Benz engineers removed almost all of the bodywork, and then added cross-bracing and other chassis strengthening to it to compensate for the loss of rigidity from having the top removed. The concept's 4-door convertible body retains the 3165 mm wheelbase of the S 600, but is slightly longer, at 5293 mm (up from 5206 mm). It is also slighty wider and taller thaqn the S 600, with width now 1911 mm from 1871 mm, and height 1497 mm from 1473 mm.
The engine remains the same, a single overhead cam (per bank) 5.5 litre V12 with twin turbochargers. As in the S 600, it provides 517 PS (510 bhp) at 5000 rpm and 830 Nm (612 lbft) of torque at 1900-3500 rpm. The five speed automatic transmission is also retained. As is the norm with concepts, this one features rather large 21 inch wheels, and is fitted with 275/35 ZR 21 tyres.
